Scam Calls Posing as Crypto Platform Support Rise in France After Data Breaches

Scam calls impersonating customer support staff from major crypto platforms have increased in France following several recent data breaches, according to Owen Simonin, founder and CEO of French crypto platform Meria. Simonin said callers have been posing as representatives of legitimate companies including Binance and Meria, telling users that their accounts or funds are at risk and urging them to move crypto assets to a specified address. He warned that platforms do not ask users to initiate transactions or hand over personal information when the user has not contacted support first. The warning comes after France’s Directorate General of Public Finances, or DGFiP, disclosed in August that a separate data breach allowed hackers to obtain data belonging to 678,000 taxpayers.
